Stem cell exhaustion - Hallmarks of aging

Stem cells are a type of starter cell that can develop into any specialized cell type in the body, from blood cells to skin cells. The skin is characterized by the ability to replenish and renew itself and this is thanks to the auto-regenerative capacity of stem cells. As we age, we gradually lose this ability.⁽¹⁻²⁾

Stem cells have an almost infinite capacity for regeneration. Although our skin epidermis is characterized by a high renewal capacity thanks to its multiple stem cell niches, the decline of this regenerative potential is one of the most obvious characteristics of aging. Enhancing the regenerative potential of skin stem cells is one of the key components to help reverse skin aging.⁽¹⁻²⁾
